Schedule Your Free Consultation
The first step in the dental implant process is to schedule your free consultation with Dr. Stephen Alfano. When you meet with Dr. Alfano, he’ll discuss the pros and cons of your available treatment options.
If you and Dr. Alfano decide that implants are the right solution for your smile, we can begin planning your treatment right away. He may decide that you don’t immediately qualify for the procedure due to the condition of your mouth. Unhealthy teeth or gums can compromise the stability of the implant and increase the chances for failure.
Fortunately, Dr. Alfano at Balboa Island Dentistry offers a wide range of supplemental treatments to prepare your smile for dental implants. This includes bone grafting to create a stable platform for the dental implant and treatments for gum disease such as gum grafting and scaling and root planing.
Implant Placement Procedure
The next step in the implant process occurs when Dr. Alfano surgically places the titanium implant fixture. This is a minor procedure that Dr. Alfano performs right here in our office. Through a process known as osseointegration, your jawbone will naturally develop a firm bond with the implant fixture.
Your Implant Crown
Once your body has fully adjusted to your new dental implant, you’ll be ready for your porcelain crown. Porcelain is an excellent material for dental restorations because it’s strong and it reacts to light the same way your natural teeth do. As soon as Dr. Alfano secures the crown, you’ll be ready to show off your new smile to the world.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the dental implant procedure take?
The dental implant process typically requires anywhere from six to eight months to complete. Most of this time is to allow your gums and jaw to fully heal after the initial surgery. However, the treatment time for dental implants can vary depending on several factors, including the number of implants being placed and whether a supplemental procedure is required.
At your initial consultation, Dr. Alfano will provide you with a customized treatment plan that includes an outline of all necessary procedures, as well as a time estimate.
Is getting dental implants painful?
Before placing your dental implants, Dr. Alfano will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area around the surgical site so you won’t feel a thing. We’re also happy to offer nitrous oxide or oral sedation for any patients who have sensitive teeth or suffer from dental anxiety.
You may experience some soreness and discomfort after your surgery, but this should fade quickly as your mouth heals. If necessary, you can use over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen to provide relief.
