You Can Relax at Our Office
Dental care is an important part of keeping your body healthy and your smile sparkling. But it can be difficult to go through with if you have anxiety about visiting the dentist. Luckily, we can help you get the treatment you need.
Dr. Alfano understands how you feel, and that’s why he offers dental sedation at his office. He’s licensed to provide two types of sedation for your convenience: nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Based on how you feel and the procedure you’re scheduled for, he’ll recommend the best type of sedation.
If you suffer from mild to moderate anxiety, nitrous oxide can alleviate your fear. Also known as laughing gas, this low-level conscious sedation option can help you relax and experience a stress-free visit.
Dr. Alfano will administer the gas by placing a mask over your nose and mouth. The mask is connected to a machine that combines oxygen and nitrous oxide into a breathable gas. You’ll start to feel calm after just a few breaths.
After your procedure, the gas takes about an hour to wear off. You may need a friend, family member, acquaintance, or Uber driver to drive you home.
For those with greater levels of anxiety, Dr. Alfano may recommend oral sedation. This form of sedation involves taking a pill about an hour before treatment — that way, when you arrive you’ll already feel relaxed and comfortable.
You’ll feel drowsy but remain conscious, and the feeling takes a while to wear off. So, make sure you have someone who can pick you up after the procedure is finished to drive you home.
Is Sedation Right for You?
Sedation isn’t just for dental anxiety — there are many reasons our patients choose sedation during their visits. Some of these include:
- An inability to sit in the dentist’s chair
- A low pain threshold
- An extensive amount of dental work
- Sensitive teeth
- Fear or anxiety preventing them from routine dental visits
- A gag reflex that makes receiving dental care difficult

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sedation safe?
Yes! As long as the medication is administered by a licensed dentist, you have nothing to worry about. Rest assured, we’ll monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure they remain at a normal level. If any problem is detected, we can stop your treatment and begin reversing the sedation at once.
If you suffer from certain conditions, such as obesity or sleep apnea, you may be at risk for complications from sedation. During your initial consultation with Dr. Alfano, make sure to inform him of any medical conditions that you have so he can help determine a safe treatment plan for you.
Will I be unconscious?
One of the most common misconceptions about dental sedation is that you’ll be unconscious during treatment, but this isn’t the case. In fact, you’ll remain awake and responsive throughout your procedure no matter which sedation option you choose. However, you’ll feel deeply relaxed and likely won’t remember the experience later. We often refer to this state of consciousness as “twilight sleep.”
